Increasingly popular for sports recovery, mental wellbeing or even self-improvement rituals, cold baths are seductive because of their benefits... provided they are really cold 🧊
But here's the thing: getting the water temperature down below 12°C isn't always easy, especially at the height of summer.
Here are all the tips from Ice Family for transforming a simple bathtub... into a polar pool. 💪
🧊 How do you cool water quickly?
Here are the best techniques for getting down to temperature quickly (and well):
1. Add small pieces of ice
Thin ice has a larger contact surface: it melts faster and cools the water more quickly than large blocks.
2. Brassez régulièrement l’eau
By mixing, you avoid pockets of warmer water and speed up the temperature equalisation process.
3. Commencez avec de l’eau déjà fraîche
If possible, fill your bath with very cold tap water or water from a previously cooled supply.
4. Ajoutez du sel à la glace
A chemist's trick! The salt lowers the melting point of the ice, allowing the water temperature to drop even further.
5. Protégez votre bain du soleil
Place your tub or vat in the shade, or cover it with an insulating tarpaulin: avoiding passive heating can save several degrees.
6. Utilisez des blocs de glace ou bouteilles d’eau congelées
They take longer to melt, but provide a slow, lasting drop in temperature without diluting the water.
